New members may find it takes some time to get into the habit of learning on a regular basis. Use these tips to help get your training on track so you can reap the benefits of Absolute Best as soon as possible.
1. Understand there will never be time.
Running and operating your own business is time consuming, add to that family and personal commitments, and it is no wonder that we often feel that there are not enough hours in the day. Learning and building on your skills are some of the most important activities for business owners, and should be high on their list of priorities; however, these activities often stay on the to-do list or are put off altogether. It is fantastic that you have taken the first step and have joined the Absolute Best team. But remember, if you wait for some spare time to pop up, you will be waiting for a long time as there will always be something to do, places to go or someone to see. The key to success is that you have to MAKE TIME! Our article on “The Big Rock Theory” is a great place to start.
2. Small victories can be sweet.
A large number of our clients want to start with the business planning process. We agree with this decision and believe if you complete our step-by-step plan and put in the research, thought and effort that are required, you will receive an invaluable level of insight into your business and the return will be well worth the effort. It is, however, a big task and as a new member it may be better to start with some of the shorter, yet valuable, learning articles to get you into the swing of things. Some of the shorter articles are certainly short and sweet and can give you some tangible benefits and they will also help with your business planning process. The “Working on versus working in the business” and “80:20 Rule – The Pareto Principle” articles will both be beneficial in the process.
3. Easy to do and easy not to do.
Like so many things in life, spending time on our self-development and our business is often easy to do but also very easy not to do. As US President Dwight Eisenhower once said, “what is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important”. The key to success is making the time for those things that will have an impact on your future rather than those that impact on your day-to-day life. For example, time spent empowering and motivating employees can not only improve your business, but will also save a lot of time in the longer term when managing your team. We suggest one of the first learning articles you complete is “Urgent/important matrix”.
4. Time will expand to the time you give it.
Ever wondered why the most productive day for you or your employees is generally the one just before heading off on leave? When a holiday is approaching, most people work hard to ensure they leave no loose ends, so they can relax knowing everything has been done in preparation for their holiday. Most of us could be more productive and effective so we can make time for things such as learning and training. Take the time to complete our “Introduction to time management” article to highlight any areas of potential improvement.
